: Chuck NewtonThin Mints and Thin Macs - You Decide Which One Is Best
By chucknewton
Spring approaching brings us the Girl Scouts and the Thin Mint cookie. It now also brings us the thin laptop computer from Apple. Now I am a fanatic about the Thin Mint cookie touted by the Girl Scouts. I am less of a fanatic about Apple. (My apology to Grant Griffiths).
The computer varies in width. At its beefiest, the new computer is .76
inches thick; at its thinnest, it's .16 inches, he said. It comes
standard with an 80- gigabyte hard drive, with the option of a 64GB
flash-based solid state drive as an upgrade. The machine
doesn't come with a built-in optical drive for reading CDs and DVDs, a
feature Steve Jobs says consumers will not miss because they can download movies
and music over the Internet and access the optical drives on other PCs
and Macs to install new software. Which is find, I guess, but it seems that Jobs has left out the business market and legal market for his computers again, who want such machines and need the extras. I do not want a computer just for downloading movies and music over the Internet. External stuff simply bogs you down. As usual, Apple sells WOW and fashion and the computer is priced as such. It will cost $1,799. If you need it to run PC or Microsoft programs it probably will but you will have to purchase those programs. Software is expensive, so it will greatly increase your costs of operating this machine. The one thing I do love and appreciate about Apple is that they do set design standards. And PC makers do tend to be copy cats. So, we can expect to see ultra thin PC laptops that do even more for less money in the not to distant future.
