: ACS BlogMd. Gov. To Push For Repeal of Death Penalty
Maryland’s governor says he will push the state legislature to repeal the death penalty. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) told The Washington Post that he would do “everything in [his] power” to end capital punishment in the state. O’Malley said the death penalty does not deter crime, wastes resources and risks putting innocent people to death. He vowed “lobby people on the merits of the issue. I just feel personally compelled to try.” A bill to repeal the death penalty hasn’t had much support in the Maryland General Assembly and Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D) told The Post that he thought O’Malley still faces an uphill battle.
