Christmas in England

ADVERTISEMENTS
It's pretty much the same as back in the colonies, though there are way more "holiday specials" on the telly than around here. We ate puddings and sat around the fire and played games and got visits from Father Christmas. We managed to watch the first half of the Patriots perfect season closing game before we finally fell asleep.

It was perfectly lovely and relaxing; a great, low-key two weeks with Jon and his family, and it was warm enough to take regular walks on the beach, which is always a bonus, but I can't help but feel cheated out of my White Christmas a bit. I missed the snowbombing of my plane by a day on each end: a snowstorm the day before I left for England and another one today, the day after I arrived home.

I feel blessed to be a part of two families now, each so unique and so loving in their own ways; it's strange how peaceful I feel going into 2008, but maybe that's partially attributable to being hopped up on Sudafed. I, of course, caught a nasty cold the day before my plane journey and was that horrible person on the plane that everyone hates because every cough strikes fear into the hearts of nearby passengers that they'll be the next victim of my illness. I tried to be good though. I brought a plastic bag to deposit all my tissues, bought throat lozenges and the aforementioned Sudafed, and antibacterial hand wipes.

Not to get Seinfieldian on you again, but have my fellow travelers noticed the replacement of movies on planes with flight-long advertisements and TV shows? The good airlines have seatback screens where you can choose your own movies throughout the flight, but the last few flights I've taken, I was forced to watch clips of shows from CBS interspersed with ads and random old episodes of old sitcoms like Cheers and Frasier. There was ONE movie on the 7.5 hour flight (of course, Hairspray). That to me, is ridiculous.
