The Pros & The Cons

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
Being unemployed gives me a lot of time to think. I now have many hours to think about many important things.  I can research the case law & rules & constitutions regarding the Senate's refusal to seat Roland Burris. I can read every article available on the conflict in the Middle East. I can organize my closet. Oh wait. I already did that. Anyway, my point is unemployment, as with all things in life has pros. And cons. Lets discuss.

Pro: I have time to work out again.

Con: Ahem. Working out is work.

Pro: This is very important to the NY Resolution of "being healthier"

And so, I've been working out more. Plus one for being a loser!

Pro: I have a lot less laundry to do because I'm not wearing my dry-clean-only work clothes or really any clothes beyond work-out pants & pajama pants. Of the chic, preppy variety.

Con: My beautiful heels sit unused in the closet and, um, I'm one of those people that showers & puts on clean pajamas. And sometimes wears my robe all day. (Wow. Typing that "out loud" was painful. )

Hmm. Lets call this a tie.

Pro: I get to sleep in.

Con: I miss the Today Show, the daily weather and the morning news. Today I didn't know it was snowing until I opened the blinds to close the window due to the Arctic wind that was blowing in. (My radiators work on overtime, thus I often have open windows in the winter.)

Pro: Hello! Sleeping in!

Con: I'm ruining my going to bed at 10 pm routine by sleeping in until 10 am.

Who am I kidding? Another plus one for unemployment!

Pro: I can openly search for better jobs than the one I had before.

Con: And I can also watch shows on ABC.com, read blogs, write blog posts, and whittle away hours on the World Wide Web.

Hmm. This is going in the negative category. I sound like a boring, internet surfing, pajama wearing loser.

Pro: I can watch daytime TV.

Con: I don't actually watch daytime TV because I don't actually *like* daytime TV.

Another negative for unemployment.

Pro: I have time to cook things for dinner I didn't have time to before. Red beans & rice. Chili. Lasagna. Other slow roasting, slow cooking delicacies.

Con: These delicious dishes don't always fit into my "being healthy" NY Resolution.

We'll call this a draw. My turkey chili was pretty good last night. And I made BISMOW a "cheer up" chocolate cake from scratch. (Does anyone need some cake? I have extra.)

Pro: My other unemployed friends, well, we have lots of time to hang out.

Con: But we have no money so we basically just talk online all day because it is free.

Hmm. This unfortunately is a negative because man oh man, we are so broke.

Pro: I have all day long to apply for jobs.

Con: There are no jobs to apply for because the economy, it sucks. I just applied to be a Kaplan tutor, and I'm going to have to retake the ACT because my score is so old because I'm OLD AND UNEMPLOYED.

On second thought, I'll let y'all be the judge on this one.

So there you have it. Daisy's thoughts on unemployment. Tomorrow....well, the world. Lets conquer it.
