Cars: Good News Bad News

Chrysler sales are higher this month than last – that’s the good news. The bad news is that Chrysler car sales fell in December by 59%.

“Chrysler sold a total of 89,813 vehicles compared with 191,423 in the same month last year. Despite the drop, the month's sales were up about 5 percent from November levels.

The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company said car sales tumbled 59 percent, while truck sales tumbled 51 percent.”

Ford’s sales fell 32% in December and were about 500,000 less overall for the year.

Toyota recorded a 37% drop in December sales. Overall Toyota suffered a 16% drop in sales for the year.

GM’s overall 2008 sales fell to a 49 year low after a 31% slide on sales in the month of December. “GM and Chrysler received commitments last month for as much as $17.4 billion in U.S. loans, saying they would have run short of operating cash by this month.

GM’s results last month beat the average estimate of a 41 percent drop among six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. Tempering the decline was a 43 percent surge in deliveries of the Chevrolet Malibu sedan. Sales of GM’s Saab brand, which the Detroit-based automaker says it may sell, fell 57 percent.”
