An interesting exploration of Science 2.0:
The science of Web 2.0 and what it means for research
"In the world of Web 2.0 everybody gets the chance to rate and evaluate a vast range of products and services. What does this mean for the research world? Beehive Research's Paul Kavanagh tries to find a formula for valuable insight."
Since we all know that the Google boys were inspired by the work of Eugene Garfield and citation indexing which can serve as one factor in determing the impact of your publication and research record, we know library foundations matter. It is still interesting in this piece to consider the role of various web 2.0 rating systems (like Digg, Delicious, Connotea, etc.) in the field of science research.
Are other factors going to start playing a bigger role in academic life? It is widely acknowledged that the traditional citation impact factors are lagging indicators and indeed some areas of science are moving away from traditional publishing (note the speed at which the human genome was mapped when freed from traditional juried publishing processes - not that I am positing anything more than correlation not causation - grin).
Something to watch.
Stephen
