By Jessica Smagacz

ADVERTISEMENTS
pp class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt" The Coca-Cola Co. is going to use a new sweetener that has zero calories in their products, a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2008/12/15/business/AP-Drinks-Sweetener.html?_r=1amp;scp=2amp;sq=%2b%22Food+and+Drug+Administration%22amp;st=nyt"NY Times/a reports. FDA has taken longer than expected to approve the new sweetener. The sweetener is made from an herb called stevia which is generally regarded as safe./p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt"Coke has created two versions of the stevia based product, one being Cokersquo;s Truvia (marketed by Cargill) and is made from rebiana, a stevia-based extract. /p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt"PepsiCo has also created two versions of stevia based products; however, PepsiCo has decided not to begin selling the drinks until FDA has made its final official decision./p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt"A possibility that FDA is taking longer to make the official decision may be because FDA questioned the safety of stevia, a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2008/12/15/business/AP-Drinks-Sweetener.html?_r=1amp;scp=2amp;sq=%2b%22Food+and+Drug+Administration%22amp;st=nyt"NY Times /areports. a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2008/12/15/business/AP-Drinks-Sweetener.html?_r=1amp;scp=2amp;sq=%2b%22Food+and+Drug+Administration%22amp;st=nyt"FDA/a wrote in a letter to Hain Celestial saying, ldquo; In fact, literature reports have raised safety concerns about the use of stevia, including concerns about control of blood sugar, and effects on the reproductive, cardiovascular and renal systems.rdquo;/p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt"I certainly hope that FDA makes a well thought out decision about the use of this sweetener because it can have the possibility of effecting millions of consumers who drink Coke amp; Pepsi products. /p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt" /p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt" /p p /p/pa href="http://atlanta.injuryboard.com/toxic-substances/coke-will-begin-selling-products-with-a-new-zero-calorie-sweetener-without-official-fda-approval.aspx?googleid=253434"Originally posted/a at a href="http://www.InjuryBoard.com"InjuryBoard/a by a href="http://www.injuryboard.com/member-profiles/Jessica-Smagacz"Jessica Smagacz/a
