Boston Jury Awards $3.9 m for leg amputation

Like what happened to the woman in Des Moines, on September 13, 2005 an MBTA bus in Boston struck a woman (Rita Traybman) at the intersection of Washington and East Newton streets in the South End. She was in a crosswalk, having the right of way was struck from behind. The woman who was now 61, was awarded $3.9 million, with interest it could go as high as $5.4 million.

In April 2008 another pedestrian was struck by a bus in Des Moines. The 26-year-old woman, Tiffany Schmit, was struck but not killed. This is the fourth bus-pedestrian accident involving a bus in Des Moines in the past ten months.
