: Legal Pad | LAACLU wins victory for religiously observant women
By Richard Binder
Jameelah Medina was arrested in June 2005 for an invalid train pass and subsequently incarcerated for 12 hours. During her stay in jail, she was forced to remove her headscarf in accordance with San Bernardino County's safety concerns and in spite of her protestations that doing so was against her Muslim beliefs. Two years later, with the aid of the ACLU of Southern California, she filed a lawsuit against the county. According to details released yesterday during a press conference at the ACLU's Orange County office, the resulting settlement included not only a radical change in previous policy but considerable damages as well.
A copy of the complaint can be found here.
