Exploding Boat Injures Florida-Georgia Fans

By Eddie Farah

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Florida-Georgia game weekend started on a bad note for four fans aboard a boat that exploded in the Intracoastal Waterway of Jacksonville.

Two people were reportedly thrown from the boat when it exploded and burned to a crisp. The explosion occurred as the boat was refueling near the Palm Cove Marina on Beach Boulevard. A witness says he saw the flames and the U.S. Coast Guard was called into action.

“It is our understanding that two people were launched from the boat when it exploded and the other two passengers continued to operate the boat, trying to get it back to the marina,” says U.S. Coast Guard Lt. A. Vizeca.

But the boat never made it back to the marina. It continued burning right down to the water line. The two thrown from the boat had serious injuries and another person had minor injuries while a fourth person was not hurt.

Fortunately, a good citizen pulled them from the water.

The Coast Guard has no idea what happened. Still, they sent out a warning asking boaters to use extra caution. A boat can explode if there is a mechanical problem or if fuel is put into the wrong area, which happened in this case. It was then flushed out with water.

Apparently this was a weekend the four will not forget, but for the wrong reason.
