This just in from Clifford Chance: Today, according to a statement, the firm told 20 associates in the firm’s U.S. Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice, located in New York and D.C., that they would be laid off “as sluggishness in litigation matters continues despite market volatility that historically has produced countercyclical balance.”
The layoffs were not performance-driven, says the statement, and those affected will receive severance packages. News of the layoffs was first reported on Above the Law.
The layoffs are notable for a couple of reasons. For one thing, Clifford was one of the first firms to lead the last year’s worth of layoffs when it fired six associates from its structured finance department in November of 2007. Secondly, this is the first large raft of litigation layoffs we’ve seen in the current cycle.
