Personally kickstarting the economy

JW and I have been talking about replacing our windows forever. Our house, built in the 1960s when oil was cheap, came with virtually no insulation and windows that actually ice over in the wintertime. JW and his father have filled the attic with insulation, and we decided it was finally time to take care of the windows -- except, gulp, it cost thousands of dollars more than I expected. We're going through with it anyway, even though I get a little knot in my stomach when I think about the money. I don't want K to freeze this winter. Our heating solutions last year did not work well.

Then, this morning, I dropped off the car at the local garage to get the horn fixed and inspection done. I was furious when I picked it up and, not only was nothing done, but they had charged me $90 for diagnosing that the horn was broken. (It's partly my fault, too -- they tried to get in touch with me to authorize the repair, but my cell phone doesn't work well when I'm at my internship.) The garage was closed and just the cashier was open, so I have to go back tomorrow morning to talk to them. Like a good negotiator, I decided to research the price of fixing the horn. I thought maybe I could work out a deal where I just paid for parts or they gave me a discount on labor, since they had already charged me so much.

What do you think? A hundred bucks? Two hundred?

$866.50. Apparently on my model of car, the horn is part of the airbag assembly and the entire thing needs to be replaced. Without a working horn, the car won't pass inspection and the registration can't be renewed.

I'm still enjoying my last few months of school, but suddenly gainful employment sounds like a good idea.

Now excuse me while I go puke in the backyard.

It's just money. It's just money. We may be in Depression II, but it's just money. That's what I keep telling myself.
