: Threat LevelLetterman's Skewering of McCain's Campaign Maneuvers Is An Instantaneous Viral Hit Online
By Ryan Singel, Kevin Poulsen, Sarah Lai Stirland, Kim Zetter, and David Kravets
David Letterman isn't buying John McCain's "I'm suspending the campaign to resolve the economic crisis, and I have to cancel my appearance on your show" line. That's because Letterman caught McCain dissing him for his CBS colleague and news anchor Katie Couric.
"I have nothing but the highest regard for this man -- because he?s a true American hero, who as Bill Clinton said the other night, gave everything but for his life for America during the Vietnam war," Letterman said during the taping of his show Late Show with David Letterman Wednesday. "We?re in sorry need and have a short supply of heros like John McCain."
But McCain should have sent his vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, Letterman said.
"Sure there's an economic crisis, but here's what you do if you're running a campaign in the middle of an economic crisis, and it's about to 'crater' ... don?t suspend your campaign. You let your campaign go on shouldered by your vice presidential nominee. That?s what you do. You don?t quit!" Letterman said on his show. "Or is that a really good thing to do? See what I?m saying? this guy doesn?t have an ounce of quit in him! So all of a sudden we?re quitting the campaign?"
YouTube views have skyrocketed, with 1.4 million views of the clip being reported by Unruly Media's Viral Video Chart.
That made it the most political video of the week, according to Unruly Media's measurement.
