One dead, three injured after truck plows through San Mateo, California grocery store parking lot

A construction truck barreled down a hill and through a crowded San Mateo parking lot Monday, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

The black container truck “apparently had some type of mechanical failure” while driving down 43rd Avenue, a residential street that dead-ends into a parking lot for Mollie Stone¹s grocery, said San Mateo Police Capt. Kevin Raffaelli.

About 1:15 p.m., it broad-sided a black sport-utility vehicle and dragged it about 75 feet into the parking lot, hitting eight or nine other vehicles along the way. In the process it also hit and injured a pedestrian. One victim, an occupant of one of the vehicles that was hit, was declared dead at the scene.

Of the three others injured, one was taken to Stanford Hospital by helicopter and the other two by ambulance. None had been officially identified Monday afternoon. They were in serious but stable condition.

The parking lot was left in a mess of crushed vehicles and shattered glass, with blankets and debris on the ground. The entrance to the grocery store was blocked off as police and firefighters surveyed the scene.

The truck’s driver was being interviewed, Raffaelli said, and was being cooperative.
