About That "Job Search"

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
So. The job hunt. The job search. The never-ending, never-ceasing stream of rejection. That thing my parents ask about, hopefully, wistfully, somewhere in every phone conversation.

The job search is going swimmingly thanks. To date I have:

- Been told that I am over-qualified by virtue of working at BPLF

- Been told that I am under-qualified by virtue of not having a license to practice yet

- Been asked if the pipes at BPLF are made of 24 Karat gold

- Been asked what Mr. BPLF is "really like"

- Arrived at an interview to discover it was not actually an interview but merely a Q & A on life at BPLF

- Been hung up on, laughed at & called crazy (all in a quick 10 seconds) when answering a prospective employers question regarding salary hopes & dreams. My salary request, for the record, was for a salary that would not cover my rent+bills+student loans+groceries. You know, those extravagant dreams of mine...avoiding the bill collectors. I was also informed, immediately prior to being hung up on, that someone with years of experience would work for said prospective employer for 10 grand less than my asking price. So now I am being punished for/by some independently wealthy litigator who can afford to work for bird seed.

- (Received my very own personalized rejection letter) x (more times than I care to remember).

- Started every single interview off with the question as to why Mr. BPLF didn't hire me. And somehow, neither the short or long answer make these people happy. How about the track record that BPLF only hires associates every 3-5 years? How about that?

- Been asked if I (or anyone at BPLF) has any idea when an important and controversial Illinois Supreme Court decision is coming down. I'm sorry, is this an interview or a chance for you to determine if I am, in fact, a magic 8 ball? Because I am here to tell you that I am not a fortune teller or psychic. My official answer to that question: Whenever the Supreme Court fucking feels like it. I'll let you know when they zap me their schedules regarding opinions. Until then, not a clue. Would you like to see my writing sample?

Is it too late to quit yet?
