Baby Becca: Month 8

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

Dear Becca,

Now you're 8 months old, and a little whirlwind. I spend hours a day chasing after you as you crawl into every corner of the house and, when you think I haven't found you yet, stick my dirty flip flops in your mouth, pull up on the toilet seat and bang on the fuzzy cover, chew on the good remote, or any number of other hazardous activities. Our apartment is too small to make a baby gate worth the hassle, and I like you having the freedom to explore your world, but whew! You try to lick the grossest things!

At daycare Your big milestones this month were starting daycare and sprouting two bottom teeth, basically at the same time. At daycare you have endless things to chew and stand up on, and you are very popular among the toddlers, who are all convinced your name is "Baby." So both daycare and teething have gone off without tears, although I can't figure out which one is causing you to be an inconsistent eater who sometimes downs a huge bowl of rice cereal and veggies and sometimes whines, plays with your chair, and zips your lips, unrelated to which food we're trying to give you. You hate bibs and try to pull them off, resulting in some unfortunate orange stains on cute outfits. Daddy and I are fighting back on this eating thing, but so far, you're winning.

Brush teeth You've become a surprisingly funny baby this month - and you've figured out that when Mommy and Daddy laugh, you can laugh along too. You like it when I hold you and run around the room yelling "Oh no!" while Daddy chases us, and scream with joy when he catches us for hugs. You love the swing at the park, find our tooth brushing very amusing, and at night, you fall asleep with a stuffed animal named Jungly Monkey in your arms.

There's one more development, just since this weekend. I used to be sure I would never bother with baby talk when simple words would do just as well. That was before we were playing on the bed and you rolled over and said, clear as day, "GO GO GO GA GA!"

So you can guess what we say to you all day now. I've suggested you're trying to say "Go Go Gadget Copter," while Daddy thinks it's "Goooo Giants!", but the point is, you're now officially a babbling baby with a toothy grin, and it is incredibly cute and makes us shake our heads at how quickly your first year of life is going. We can't wait to hear what you have to say to us.

Love,
Mommy
