Vacation, all I ever wanted

ADVERTISEMENTS
This seems to be my new vacation pattern: clean my house like crazy, then hurt my ankle so that I'm confined to the couch. What is wrong with me? At least I didn't sprain it like in June. But you'd think I would have learned my lesson and tried to do something fun while I was up and about.

K is obsessed with a gift from Grandma, a book called "It's Potty Time!" He greeted me this morning with a hearty "Pee pee! Poo poo!" "Good morning to you too," I said. "Do you want to read the potty book?" "Poo poo! Read! Poo!"

I spent half the day mediating at small claims court. I also observed a few cases while we waited for the magistrate to talk to our parties. Two of the cases were all lawyered up and had prepared affidavits and witnesses, which surprised me -- usually, if people show up and tell a coherent story in small claims, they're way ahead of the game. Then again, it was a more affluent court than the ones I've been in before. The last case was a more typical one, an argument between two unrepresented parties about property that the defendant had sold (as contractually agreed) when the plaintiff refused to pay his debt. The plaintiff's claim seemed to consist of being very upset over the defendant's actions. To make matters worse, the plaintiff kept bringing up how he had been arrested before in a similar case, even though the magistrate did his best to cut him off whenever he mentioned it. The plaintiff's point seemed to be that the defendant should have just had him arrested instead of selling his stuff. In a different case, the plaintiff kept arguing with the magistrate and interrupting him to go off on long and vehement tangents. Sometimes I have the urge to jump up and represent these people.
