The Bitter Sting of Being Good, Not Great.

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

Let me start off by saying I don’t really have much to complain about in life. I have a wonderful, beautiful fiance, two cats, a dog, a car that runs well, every musical instrument I’ve ever wanted (almost). I’m in law school, I’m on law review. I have life pretty good.

But still, every once in a while I come across something that I’m not quite good enough for. And it stings. Some of you may remember that I did not grade onto Law Review, I had to write my way on. Fortunately, I am a decent writer. You may also remember that I finished barely outside of the Top 10% in grading. So, two things in my academic career that have been “close, but no cigar.”

Today I found out that one of my dear friends, who finished a bit ahead of me in grades, and thereby automatically made it onto Law Review received an interview for the firm that I was the most excited and interested in pursuing.

And I did not.

I’m genuinely happy for her. I think she’ll get the job because she’s really smart, a hard worker, and is very personable. So, I’m happy for her. I’d rather be happy for me.
