: Legal Pad | LAAttorney Seymour Lazar sentenced over Milberg Weiss kickback scheme
By Jason Siegel
Former attorney Seymour Lazar was sentenced yesterday to six months home detention and two years probation for his part in the Milberg Weiss kickback scheme, the Associated Press reports.
Lazar, who received $2.6 million to be a professional plaintiff was fined $600,000 and agreed to forfeit $1.5 million.
He plead guilty to obstruction of justice, subscribing to a false tax return and making a false declaration in court and could have faced 18 years in federal prison. Prosecutors recommended home detention in the plea deal because Lazar is 80 years old and in poor health.
Lazar told the U.S. District Judge John F. Walter that he's had sufficient punishment over the eight year investigation, the AP reported.
Last year, Lazar told The Wall Street Journal (here) "they treat me like an absolute thug. I?m not supposed to leave the house. Did I hurt anybody? Who did I cheat? Did anybody get screwed?" and also ?I always tell people if I read The Wall Street Journal, I can come up with a class-action a day.?
