: IP BlawgMaker of Blackberry Devices Facing New Patent Infringement Challenge
By Farella Braun + Martel LLP
Research in Motion, the company that manufactures the popular Blackberry wireless email device, has once again found itself being hauled into court in connection with an alleged patent infringement violation. Only weeks after its well-publicized $612.5 million settlement of patent infringement claims brought by patent holding company NTP Inc., RIM was sued earlier this week by Redwood City based Visto Corporation. Visto brought its action in the Eastern District of Texas.
In its complaint, Visto alleges that RIM's "products and services that enable access to and/or synchronization of data in secure network environments" -- including Blackberry devices -- infringe no less than four of Visto's patents. According to the complaint, one of these patents has recently survived reexamination in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Visto is also pursuing patent infringement claims against Good Technology and Microsoft, actions that are also venued in the Eastern District of Texas.
How do you think RIM will respond to these new patent infringement allegations?
