NYT Endorses Clinton, McCain

By wt

ADVERTISEMENTS
The McCain endorsement is to be expected. I was actually a little surprised that he met with the editorial board though; he was the only GOP candidate to do so, and it's not like he needed to do so to get the endorsement. Plus he's taking heat for it in the debate.
We have strong disagreements with all the Republicans running for president. ... Still, there is a choice to be made, and it is an easy one.

The Clinton endorsement is surprising to me though.
The potential upside of a great Obama presidency is enticing, but this country faces huge problems, and will no doubt be facing more that we can?t foresee.

The next president needs to start immediately on challenges that will require concrete solutions, resolve, and the ability to make government work. Mrs. Clinton is more qualified, right now, to be president.

I think of the NYT has a paper that tries to be anti-establishment despite itself, and tries to cut against the grain. Picking Obama would have given it both of those narratives, yet it declined to do so.

Still, it made sure that Obama voters don't feel bad.

By choosing Mrs. Clinton, we are not denying Mr. Obama?s appeal or his gifts. The idea of the first African-American nominee of a major party also is exhilarating, and so is the prospect of the first woman nominee.

We'll see on February 5th, but I think this endorsement will actually be very good for Hillary in the NY primary. I think it means that very liberal people will be comfortable voting for Hillary. Given that, I think she'll take the state easily with about 65% of the vote.
