A Statement From Lonnie Johnson's Attorney

Austin criminal defense attorney Jodi Callaway-Cole, who represented Lonnie Johnson, has issued the following statement:Representing Lonnie on his subsequent federal habeas' for his death penalty case was an emotionally and professionally taxing endeavor.   I have been kept up many nights by the outcome of his case.  I knew at the beginning of his case that we had a very small chance at success at each procedural hurdle, especially petitioning the Supreme Court.  However, knowing that I did everything that I could possibly do, and knowing that Lonnie had hope for relief up to the very last half hour of his life made absolutely everything worthwhile - even having to tell a person that they were going to die.  I was on the phone with Lonnie when the Supreme Court clerk called to tell me our cert had not been granted, and I had to click over to the other line and tell him that his last chance was gone...continue to full post
