Texas Execution

For the second time this month, two executions have been carried out in the nation on the same evening. Texas executed Derrick Sonnier in Huntsville shortly after 6:00 pm.  It's the third execution of 2008 in the state; the 408th execution in Texas since 1982.  Texas has carried out far more executions than any other jurisdiction in America, more than 36% of all the executions in the country since 1977. According to TDCJ, 13 more executions are scheduled through November; additional execution dates are likely to be ordered for 2008. Also tonight, Mississippi executed Dale Bishop after Governor Haley Barbour rejected a commutation of his sentence.  It was the state's second execution of 2008.
