: Legal Pad | LAJudge overturns $1 disability discrimination award

The Los Angeles Superior Court Appellate Division overturned a $1 award for two paraplegic men for failing to prove that the disability discrimination in question was intentional, the Metropolitan News-Enterprise reports.
The two wheel-chair bound men sued a Hollywood pizza place in 2006 (Monroe v. Comboiano). They claimed the restroom mirror was too high and that the uninsulated sink exposing their legs to hot pipes.
They sought the $4,000 minimum for each violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Act and $3,000 in costs and attorney's fees. The court sided with the plaintiffs but gave a one dollar award because it had failed to establish a prima facie case.
The plaintiffs appealed, only for the appellate division to overturn the $1 award for failing to plead and prove intentional discrimination.
