A stay was issued moments ago in tonight’s scheduled execution of James Earl Reed
Prison officials say a federal court has halted the planned execution of a man scheduled to die in South Carolina’s electric chair.
James Earl Reed was scheduled to be the first person electrocuted in South Carolina in more than four years. The execution was scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
State prison officials say Reed had one federal appeal left and that it was filed just minutes before he was to be executed.
Reed has been on death row since 1996, when he was convicted of murdering Joseph and Barbara Lafayette in their Charleston County home two years earlier.Full post as published by Capital Defense Weekly on June 20, 2008 (boomark / email).
