Nevada State Prison may close

The Nevada Appeal reports that the Nevada State Prison may close as a result of the State's current budget crisis. If required to cut 4% of the Department of Correction's budget, as suggested by Governor Gibbons, the Carson City prison, which was built in the 1860s, will shut down by next January. The prison houses Nevada's only execution chamber. Meanwhile, a new prison near Las Vegas should be completed in about two years. It will include an execution chamber. Prison Chief Howard Skolnik gave no explanation as to why it is less expensive to build a new prison than to keep the prison we already have.
