Mark It Down, Redux: My Prediction for the 2008 Presidential Election

ADVERTISEMENTS
I'm predicting McCain, by the slimmest of margins.

Looking to the states that were decided by 5 percent or less back in 2004, I say ...

Obama picks up Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.

McCain, meanwhile, takes New Mexico, Ohio, Missori, Iowa, and Florida. The big question here is whether his anti-farmer image will hurt him in the Midwest. If he loses a single rural midwestern state, he's finished.

That's it. Final tally, 272 for McCain, 266 for Obama.

Assumptions: McCain chooses Crist, Obama doesn't choose Warner, Webb, or Sebelius.

This prediction rides on McCain taking Crist as his VP, which I predicted long ago he would. If he takes Pawlenty, who couldn't even deliver MN during the GOP primary, he will likely lose Florida and probably not even pick up Minnesota's 10 electoral votes. Conversely, if Obama takes Warner or Webb as his VP, he turns Virginia, and he wins easily. If he chooses Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of Kansas - he still wins.

In sum, I disagree with WT. Michigan is not the axis of the 2008 election, and NH doesn't really factor in. I am loathe to say it, but conventional wisdom prevails here: it's all about Iowa, Ohio, and Florida, and, more importantly, the VP picks.

It's a wild prediction, but I'm standing by it. Any takers?
