: Legal Pad | LACalifornia Supreme Court denies delay on same-sex marriages
By Jason Siegel
The California Supreme Court denied the petition for a rehearing and a stay their ruling on same-sex until November.
Yesterday's order didn't provide information on how the justices reached their decision, just that the three dissenting justices voted to grant a rehearing and that their May 15 decision will be effective June 16 at 5 p.m.
If voters pass an initiative banning same-sex marriages, the status of married same-sex couples will be heavily litigated and decided by the state high court, UCLA law professor Brad Sears told the Los Angeles Times.
An upcoming study by the Williams Institute at UCLA's School of Law predicts over 20,000 same-sex couples to get married before November and, if the initiative banning same-sex marriage is rejected, nearly 120,000 to take place in California by 2011, the Times reported.
