Texas changed the law about when schools should start in August starting last year. Now schools have to start later so parents and kids can have their late August vacations. The problem is that in the past schools typically let out for the summer beginning on the start of the Memorial holiday weekend. Now everyone gets three days, including the weekend, and our kids have to be right back in school on Tuesday.
In the past it seemed that The Woodlands would turn into a ghost town of sorts at the start of the Memorial weekend. At least it would seem we did not have to fight the crowds wherever we went. Not so this time. Kids and parents are everywhere.
I can state this observation because me and my family have almost always treated the Memorial holiday as a staycation. That is to say that we used it as a vacation that is spent at home enjoying all that our home and our community has to offer.
Because of work and other obligations most of our communities have a lot to offer in which we never get to participate, and we do not always get to enjoy our homes and communities. A staycation can allow you to do this.
Besides, I hate traveling and vacationing when everyone else is trying to do so at the same time. I call it the Mass Door Effect. When my family goes to Mass, and it is over, it seems that all several hundred people race to the door at the same time. It gets crowded, nobody can get out, the parking lot gets clogged, and tempers flair. That is church for you. I just brings out the best in everyone. My family and I just do not like being in the middle of it, so we just sit, relax, contemplate and let the mayhem pass. And, that is exactly how we feel about vacationing on Memorial, 4th of July and Thanksgiving holidays. In short, I refuse to race my fellow parishioners to the door.
I am just going to enjoy my staycation.
