: Dispatches from the Culture WarsReport from the Libertarian Convention
By Ed Brayton
David Weigel is reporting for Reason from the libertarian national convention, where Bob Barr is trying to get the nomination from a skeptical group of delegates. The Libertarian Party has fallen so far. It makes me sad to see what has happened to it in the last 10 years. I've never had any illusions about it becoming a major party. Like all third parties in the US, the goal is just to influence the two major parties, get them to coopt enough of the platform to make things marginally better.
Libertarian ideas deserve a place at the table and deserve to be taken seriously, especially when it comes to constitutional matters. But there are also a hell of a lot of loonies in the LP and they seem to be running the asylum at the moment. All the reasonable people gave up and flew the coop years ago. And the more they nominate people like Badnarik, the less seriously they'll be taken.
