Many may think that public law is for whimps and not for the real stuff, well in the case of the Washington DC Attorney General’s office the plan is to transform the office into a “first rate law firm” - starting with what all first rate law firms do and firing lawyers.
The hard-ass driving all this is Attorney General Peter Nickles who says the purge is only the beginning for the $100 million legal operation.
The Washington Post reported him: “There’s been no dress code. We’ve had a lot of bluejeans being worn, and that’s not appropriate for a professional office.” He said that timecards and weekly reports will allow him and his deputies to “get a sense of what people are doing.”
Apart from the ‘transformation’ of the agency, he said the layoffs also related to the poor performance of many of the lawyers. No more, according to the DC Attorney General.
A performance review process Nickles instituted shortly after he took over the office in December determined the employees identified for termination, he said. Deputies and supervisors looked at “who the stars are and who is not up to that star capacity,” Nickles said.
