: Legal Pad | LAGroup sues California over use of lease revenue bonds for prison expansion
By Jason Siegel
A group is suing to block California's $7 billion plan to build 53,000 new jail and prison beds, KPBS reported (LISTEN).
The lawsuit was filed by Californians United for a Responsible Budget against Gov. Schwarzenegger, the state treasurer and head of the state Dept. of Finance.
The lawsuit claims that AB 900 violates voters rights to approve or reject debt created by the $7 billion in lease revenue bonds for the prison expansion, citing Article XVI, Section 1 of the California Constitution. They also allege that it constitutes an illegal waste of scarce government resources, citing Section 526a of the Code of Civil Procedure.
