: Legal Pad | LAO.C. begin first death penalty cases in a year
By Jason Siegel
Today began the first two death penalty trials in Orange County in a year, reported "The Crime Scene," a blog by the Orange County Register.

Opening statements begin in the death penalty trial of Benjamin Watta, charged with raping and murdering a 70 year old woman in 1980. Prosecutors decided to seek the death penalty against Watta in 2005 after Florida authorities linked his DNA to a separate unsolved 1995 rape, the O.C. Register reported.
