Head-On Driver Wreck May Have Been Intentional

By Eddie Farah

ADVERTISEMENTS

A four-vehicle wreck south of Fernandina Beach killed two and injured four others Wednesday. Police say that the wreck may have been intentional.

Just after 1:30 pm, a pickup truck being driven north on state Road 200 crossed the median. The driver then waited there for a moment or two. He then turned south into the northbound lanes, struck one car head-on, then two others before overturning and catching fire.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it looks like the driver had time to think about what he was doing then accelerated into oncoming traffic.

"The vehicle driving erratically, stopped in the median for a minute or two, then all of a sudden, went in the wrong lane, traveling at a high rate of speed into opposing traffic," Leeper told Channel 4's Laura Mazzeo.

The driver of the first vehicle hit head-on, 68-year-old Thomas Cook, died at the scene. Four people were taken to the hospital after the wreck was strewn across the road.

The driver of the pickup to causes the wrecks burned to death in his vehicle. He has not been publicly identified.  An autopsy will help conclude what caused the driver to turn around and drive the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

We all know we can be the innocent victim of a motor vehicle every time we get behind the wheel.  But an intentional act by an emotional driver is something we don't think about.  Unfortunately, a car makes a great weapon for someone who wants to do harm.
