See, Mom, I Told You Video Games Are Good For You!

ADVERTISEMENTS
A Reuters Health Report released today said that video games can be good for your emotional well-being.
"Mastering challenges in video games can be a healthy way of coping when opportunities for feeling independent or competent are scarce in the real world."
That sounds familiar. Mmm. Video game bliss.

In other news, I recently listened to an episode of the BBC Radio's "The Long View" (sadly, no longer available), wherein the reporter compared the fervor over the dangers of gaming to similar concerns in the 18th century . . . over books. Seems parents and legislators alike were concerned about young people receding too deeply into fantasy worlds, not being able to tell fiction from reality, and spending too much time indoors. The best part about the article was that there was a genuine, heated, but intelligent, debate. Everybody formed their arguments intelligently and respectfully without grandstanding or name-calling. No Jack Thompsons allowed. I can't decide if the British are better than us at this, or if it's just the beauty of the BBC. Anyway, with any luck, in ten years the Jack Thompsons of the world will look like luddite toolboxes, and people will realize that if The Godfather can be great media in book and movie form, there's nothing worse, or even all that different, about The Godfather: The Video Game. Well-adjusted people will always be able to tell fiction from reality. And what helps you become a more well-adjusted person? Video Games!
