Questioning the significance of DNA matches

The significance of DNA matches in "cold hit" cases are often exaggerated by prosecutors and crime labs across the country, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The odds of a coincidental DNA match is often hundreds of thousands of times more likely than the odds provided prosecutors and crime labs provide to jurors, despite the recommendations by the National Research Council and the FBI's DNA advisory board for more conservative estimates, reports the Times.
