: Legal Pad | LAChula Vista councilman acquitted of perjury charges
By Jason Siegel
The first elected official tried by the San Diego District Attorney's Public Integrity Unit failed yesterday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Steve Casteneda, a member of the Chula Vista City Council, was acquitted on six of the 10 perjury counts and the judge declared a mistrial on the remaining four counts after the jury couldn't reach a consensus.
The D.A. Office told the Union-Tribune that he could be prosecuted on the remaining four charges - one count was 10-2 for acquittal and another was split 6-6.
The D.A.'s Office charged Casteneda with felony perjury, because they believed he lied in their 2006 investigation of rumors that he used his council position to get cheap or free rent.
