: Eastern District of Texas Federal Court PracticeKudos to Texas lawyers volunteering to represent children in West Texas
By Michael Smith
For those who haven't heard yet, approximately 400 lawyers from all over Texas have volunteered to head for San Angelo in deep West Texas to represent free of
charge the 416 children who were found nearly two
weeks ago in a raid on a polygamist sect's compound. This story in the Austin paper (and here on CNN) summarizes what's happening, including the massive logistical problem of housing and feeding all those lawyers, but I just wanted to recognize all the hard work by lawyers all over the state to organize this volunteer effort, as well as the lawyers volunteering their time to represent these kids. I've had the good fortunate to serve on the State Bar board with the trial judge who's working on this case, Judge Barbara Walther, and the lawyer who is coordinating the volunteer attorneys, Tom Vick of Weatherford, and these people - and the many, many organizations and individuals that are working with them (including numerous local bars and State Bar entities) - are doing a great job to make sure that this case is handled right.
The bar's response to this situation is something that we can all be proud of.
