Latest Government press conference

By Karl-Friedrich Lenz

ADVERTISEMENTS

Now viewable at the Government live stream site (21st, six PM).

Chief cabinet secretary Edano started out with a report about the Governments restrictions regarding the sale of milk and vegetables from some Prefectures close to the site. These measures are not necessary to stop damage to human health, since the levels triggering them are set very conservatively. There is no way consuming these foods only for a short time could lead to damage. Food producers will be compensated for their losses. Technically, this is an order from the Japanese Prime Minister Kan addressed to the Prefectures.

I applaud these measures. If there is any real damage, a lot of it will come from food contamination. These strong restrictions show clearly that the Japanese Government is not going to tolerate any real risks from this direction.

There have been reports about a new fire at Unit 3; however, that has not elevated radiation levels at the site.

Edano stressed that food is safe and especially the media should refrain from spreading false rumors.
