Attention Paralegal Students: 2011 NFPA/Thomson Reuters Scholarship Available

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
The National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA)  is accepting applications for two large scholarships sponsored by Thomson Reuters, available in the amounts of $3,000 and $2,000. The deadline to submit your application is July 1, 2011, and the PDF application is here.

Applicants must:

  • Be accepted or enrolled in an accredited paralegal program or college level program with an emphasis in paralegal studies;
  • Provide three references;
  • Discuss how they are financing their paralegal educations;
  • List community, college, and honors activities;
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from an employer, or a paralegal program director or instructor;
  • Provide an official transcript showing a GPA of B or higher; and
  • Write a short essay on this topic:

The economy has had a strong impact on the practice of law. As a paralegal student, who will soon be graduating, describe the current legal job market in your community, and how your paralegal education can give you an advantage in securing paralegal employment.

This is an important and timely issue. Anyone pursuing a paralegal education should be extremely familiar with the legal job market in the area he or she wants to work, as well as have a plan for becoming employed, which includes professional networking and obtaining above average computer skills while still in school.
