: Practical ParalegalismToday's Quote: Is the Jury Out on Paralegal Schools?
By Lynne DeVenny
Even for those lucky enough to find a job in their desired field, there?s still no guarantee that it will pay well enough. Paralegal Today, an independent magazine about the paralegal profession, noted that lawyers, legal assistants, paralegals and others employed in the legal industry have been "required to take a hack in their earnings, renounce their bonuses or were just laid off because of funding cuts and a low order for work." ~ From "The jury's out on law schools" (mndaily.com)
You'd have to be living under a rock if you still believe that going to law school will land you a phat-cat job making the big bucks in the land o' milk and honey.
But are you living under a rock if you still think that a paralegal degree is a ticket to steady employment in what the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbrook, 2010-11 Edition, still projects as a fast-growing profession?
I don't know which issue of Paralegal Today this article is referencing, but I know from personal experience that legal staffers took a hit right beside the lawyers who employ them, and while the legal job market is better than it was two years ago, legal professionals are still losing their jobs - just like everybody else. And no doubt plenty of us lucky enough to keep our jobs aren't getting compensated as much as we were before the bottom dropped out of the economy.
Don't get me wrong. I think that being a paralegal is an excellent career choice for some people, but that in these tough times, it takes more work to get into the profession - and stay there - than the BLS occupational overview discloses.
