Solo Practice
: The Dreams of a SoloLife is like a box of chocolates
By Solo Dreamer
This post marks my 13th month here on The Dreams of a Solo and my 10th month since opening Dosch Law Firm, LLC. But the point of this particular post is neither this blog nor my practice. Instead, I wanted to share with you the real reason why I chose to head in the direction that I have over the past year and change. If you have been a regular reader of this blog or if you have happened across the meme in late December 2007 "Lawyers Appreciate ...." you'd have seen that I do what I do because I love and appreciate family more than anything else. With that in mind I am happy to announce that my "family" is "scheduled" to add another member in early December of this year. It will be our first child and my wife and I could not possibly be more excited.
Needless to say it should be an exciting and interesting seven months as we follow life's greatest processes. Like so many things I have already learned more about myself and about life in general in the month since we learned the news than I had in my previous 29 years on this planet. As the famous scholar, Forrest Gump, stated in 1994 movie bearing his name, Forrest Gump, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. I would have never thought that my life would have gone the way that it has. I have had a number of great opportunities in life and good fortune has come my way on more than one occasion. These things don't just happen, even though it appears that way at times. But, we should do whatever we can to take control of our own destiny. I don't mean that we should all do one thing or the other based on what I say or what other legal or law practice bloggers my say. More than anything else I think that we owe it to ourselves and to those that count on us to do whatever we can to take the wheel in destiny's car. If that means solo practice, then so be it. If it means creating a worthwhile and sustaining practice while gainfully employed at a small, medium or large firm, then that is great too.
As I see it the most important thing is not to be the best attorney or the best professional in your respective field. The most important thing is to be the best and most important PERSON in the lives of those that count on you. In my case that means that I need to be the best husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, and very soon, father, to everyone that I love and appreciate in life. I'd rather be the best at any of those things than anything else in the world.
