: Chuck NewtonNewspapers Are Dying - What About You?
By Chuck Newton
It is easy to see this in regard to the online news everyday, is it not? I can also see it on my breakfast table in the morning. The Houston Chronicle is getting smaller by the day, combining sections, and constantly laying off staff.
The news recently is that the Philadelphia Daily News is to become a mere edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer after the parent of both companies filed bankruptcy.
We were hit recently with the fact that Colorado's oldest newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, is folding.
In December of last year the Tribune, which owns The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune, filed for bankruptcy.
But mainly we can see it in the content of our newspapers. Original news stories are missing.
Washingtonian.Com reports that the front page of the Washington Post on March 6, 2009, for example, began with a hard news lead.
I think what all of this means is that the Third Wave is crashing on our shores, paper (all forms of paper) is dead, and the Internet and broadband is the law of the land for the foreseeable future.
It is not just newspapers or the media. It is any company or law practice that does not comply. The papers thought they could handle this matter incrementally and they could not. So, ask yourselves not if you are changing, but whether you as a lawyer and firm are moving fast enough not to get crushed by the wave.
