: Phoenix Personal Injury LawyerDoes our Safety Equipment Really Keep us Safe?
By Jackie Lecher
Larry E. Coben, who recently joined the Products Liability Department of Anapol Schwartz as a shareholder, has more than 35 years experience representing individuals who have been catastrophically injured as a result of poorly designed motor vehicles, and safety equipment, such as helmets.
His Article, Representing the Catastrophically Injured, Part I. was Published in The Legal Intelligencer on October 8, 2010.
Though, we have come a long way with product safety in the past 15 years, many of the safety standards are still outdated or lackadaisically enforced. Many helmet manufacturers chose not to provide head and neck protection in impacts with velocity changes in excess of 15 mph, opting for bare minimum requirements instead.
This is troubling to bicyclists and motorcyclists who rely on their helmets to keep them safe in the event of a crash. This is equally disturbing to parents who rely on the helmets to keep their children safe during their team football games.
Larry concludes his article advising that with these unenforced and outdated safety standards, more catastrophic brain and spinal cord injuries will occur as a result of horribly produced equipment that we are ironically relying on to protect us.
