Hit and Run Accident Casues Death of Famous Drummer-Iggy Pop

By M. Brandon Smith

ADVERTISEMENTS

He played some sweet tunes in the late 1980's and early 1990's, but Alex Kirst, a drummer for The Nymphs glam rock band, who later became a member of Iggy Pop's band, won't be making any more music. Kirst was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in the California desert on January 13th. He was only 47 years old.

According to Cathedral City Police, Kirst was on foot when he was a struck by either a white Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon struck. There was no evidence that the vehicle braked. Someone spotted Kirst on the side of Date Palm Road at around 11:45 p.m. That person called police, thinking Kirst was intoxicated.

Kirst became famous in the late 1980's and early 1990's when the Nymphs were at their peak. However, they disbanded after one album. Kirst and his brother, Whitey, joined Pete Marshal to form The Trolls, backing up Iggy Pop on his albums 'Beat 'Em Up" and 'Skull Ring.'

Kirst was a great drummer, but more importantly he was still a relatively young man. Unfortunately, because of a hit-and-run he is no longer alive. Hit-and-runs are not a joking matter. There are serious consequences for leaving the scene of an accident and whoever is responsible will ultimately be held accountable.
