2011 Accutane Jury Trial Underway In New Jersey

By M. Brandon Smith

ADVERTISEMENTS

Accutane Use
Many people strive for clear skin. Accutane is a drug that is supposed to aid in that pursuit. The problem, however, is that Accutane can allegedly cause severe bowel problems. So just how serious is this potential problem?

Lawsuits
A trial began this week for three Accutane lawsuits filed by former users of the acne medication who allege that they suffered severe bowel problems from Accutane side effects. Those lawsuits include one claim by a Hollywood actor who claims that the drug cost him his colon and a promising career.

Specifically, the consolidated trial, includes an Accutane suit brought by an actor, who starred as a young marine on trial for murder in the movie 'A Few Good Men' and also starred in the television series Twin Peaks. A press release revealed that a number of Hollywood stars are expected to testify at the actor's trial.

There are currently around 3,000 similar lawsuits circulating which all involve allegations that the drug maker failed to adequately warn users about the potential risk of injury associated with the acne medication. Plaintiffs have argued that there is an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from Accutane (isotretinoin), which could lead to ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or other damage to internal organs. Subsequently, many former users have been left with severe stomach and gastrointestinal problems that cause a great deal of pain and can have a devastating impact on their quality of life. Another Accutane trial is scheduled to begin in New Jersey state court in May 2011.

Conclusion
Accutane is intended to clear up skin problems. Clearly, that has not been the case, however, for a number of users. Does this mean you can't trust Accutane? Accutane is effective for some people, but each person needs to assess their individual situation separately. Those that have experienced problems are a result of Accutane use have the right to explore potential legal remedies.
