It was just supposed to be another appointment!

ADVERTISEMENTS

One year ago today, I was 35 weeks pregnant.  It was Friday.  I prepped a probate motion, and arranged for the process server to pick it up and take a copy to the courthouse and serve another copy on the respondent.  I went to the post office and stood in line, ankles painfully swollen, to send off certified copies.

Then I hopped in the car, drove into Portland, went to a law office to pick up a check, went across the river to pick up Matthew, then went back across the river to OHSU, and our (by then) weekly appointment.

The first time the assistant took my blood pressure, Matthew thought she might have done something wrong - he could tell from watching that it wasn't 120 over 70.  After she left the room, he took it again.  It was 180 over 86.   The doctor came in, and Matthew told him what we'd done - and the doc took it.  It was 180 over 110.

That was when the doctor announced I would be spending the night at the hospital for observation.  I was seriously stunned - it was an uneventful pregnancy!  Sure, we'd gone to the head of the perinatalogy department, and they only take high-risk pregnancies, but that was REALLY because we knew someone who was friends with the provost of OHSU and we wanted to go to a perinatalogist for pregnancy number 2, because pregnancy number 1 hadn't ended well.

I sent Matthew back to the car to retrieve and deposit the check I'd picked up, and for him to deliver the overnight bag I'd been keeping in the car.   I thought it was just going to be a one-night observation, then I'd be home.  I was more freaked out about spending the night in the hospital alone than anything else.

I do remember watching the fireworks from the opening of the Rose Festival from my room.  And not getting a good night's sleep, because I was in a labor and delivery bed.  And really, really not liking the idea that I might be on bedrest for the next few weeks....
