ADVERTISEMENTS

There is such a difference between a sick baby and a sick toddler.  I remember being panicked about each of Peach's first illnesses.  Was she peeing enough? She might be dehydrated! Breathing regularly enough? Is it asthma? Should we call the pediatrician?  The nasal aspirator was always at hand.   The first time she was sick, Matthew stayed up with her all night, and I stayed with her all the next morning.

Now...the snotty nose is there, but I can't wrestle her down to use an aspirator.  And no doubts about her breathing - the sick, teething toddler in the next room is expressing her extreme displeasure at being put back down for a nap by SCREAMING and pounding the walls.*  I figure if she has the kind of energy to do that, then she's probably OK.  (I am wondering more about how much dried snot will have been smeared all over her face and hands when she wakes up, and if that will exacerbate the red patches of eczema on her face.)  How time changes us.

Sweet baby Jesus, she's slowed down, with only a random whimper or two.  I think she may, finally, have calmed down enough to sleep.

We were blessed with a baby who slept through the night, no arguments, from 3 months on.  Around 8-9 months, something changed - she hates going to sleep.  She will sleep 11-12 hours, but she just hates going down - if she is tired enough, Matthew singing to her will be enough.  But usually, it's not nearly so easy.

*Lest you think I am completely callous for a) not rocking her or b) putting her down for a nap after she's only been awake an hour, let me assure you that she has been rocked, and when she begins careening from one location to another, throwing herself down and rubbing her eyes, well, it's time for a nap.  That goes for any of us.
