By Anne Skove, Esq.
Twenty-five years on a job requiring crucial decision-making and 24/7 availability...surgeon? Law enforcement? President (apparently they get a lot of 3 a.m. calls)?
One more detail: the salary is $53,000 (that's after the 25 years of service).
Answer: North Carolina magistrate.
North Carolina claims its salaries are the lowest in the nation. Supreme court justices bring home $137,160, far more than the magistrates yet far less than their peers in some other states. (Though Vermont, Maine, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Louisiana, Mississippi, and others fare even worse, according to the most recent Judicial Salary Survey.)
However low (or not) they are, a new bill would create a better salary structure for North Carolina's judicial employees. The article cites HB 2620, but we were unsuccessful finding a bill with that number, or searching the NC House bills at all.
