By Anne Skove, Esq.
A few things you might want to know when speaking to a South Carolinian: BBQ is a noun, not a verb, and "coke" means any kind of pop.* And, the state courts is desperately trying to increase its use certified interpreters.
Certification involves a 2-day orientation, 3-hour written test, and an oral proficiency test. The state courts partner with the College of Charleston and other entities to host the tests.
Interested in becoming an interpreter in South Carolina? See the state court's resource, How do I become a Court Interpreter?
The need is great. The state's Hispanic population has grown exponentially in recent years. See Need for Court Interpreters Booms in South Carolina, AP (October 16, 2007).
The court is also exploring barriers to court access by holding focus groups around the state. Interpretation is on the agenda. See Panel Exploring Civil Court Access, Schuyler Kropf, Post and Courier (March 11, 2008).
*Our midwestern language lesson will be held another time.
